Player Skill Level

In pickleball we use DUPR (Dynamic Universal Pickleball Rating), pronounced "dooper", a global rating system which provides a consistent and accurate way to measure pickleball player skill levels - doubles and singles.

An accurate player skill rating in pickleball helps to ensure fair and enjoyable competition. It allows players to be matched with opponents of similar skill levels, preventing one-sided games and promoting a more competitive and engaging environment. You need to know your DUPR when entering into pickleball tournaments so you can enter into the correct division for your skill level.

Understating skill levels in DUPR:

2.0 - 2.99 Beginner to low intermediate

3.0 - 3.49 Intermediate

3.5 - 3.99 High intermediate

4.0 - 4.99 Advanced

5.0 - 8.0 Elite/professional

Players enter competitions (tournaments and leagues) in the division to match their DUPR. You can play in divisions higher than your DUPR ("playing up"), but you can't play in a division lower than your DUPR ("playing down"). Anyone who plays singles tournament events will also have a singles DUPR.

A DUPR account is free and anyone can have a rating. One match result is all it takes to have a DUPR, and with 10-20 match results you will have a more accurate rating. Once you have a DUPR, your rating will change after every competitive match, based on the result. The DUPR algorithm is very sophisticated and will adjust your rating based on how many points you and your partner earned and lost against your opponents, taking all players' DUPRs into account.

Newer players who do not yet have a DUPR can self rate their ability level by using the Pickleball Australia self rating guide. Once you have entered your first tournament your results can be linked to your DUPR account which will automatically give you your pickleball rating.
